BE BACK TUESDAY, THE 13TH!

'Gotta do some Christmas shopping! I'll be back on Tuesday, the 13th!

Bye the way, a friend called up to say he discovered a video I put up a couple of years ago on the subject of "Jane Eyre." Holy Cow! I forgot all about that! I just listened to it, and found it entertaining...not because of me, but because of the reference material that I played. Give it a listen and see what you think.

Eddie, you should do more of these. Good observation about Herrmann's score. I'd add that Romeo and Juliet is an interesting combination of two kinds of story which could each be self-contained: the Godfather-style gang warfare which is all duelling and escapes and boasting, and the doomed love story. Probably you could go through most of Shakespeare's plays and point out how often they mix up genres with gleeful abandon!

From Jessica Rue (This is a comment which was just sent to an earlier post called "More Early Newspaper Strips," July 2011):

Helen Kane Did NOT Steal her character from someone else. She Stole the Word "Boop Oop a Doop" from a black singer by the name of Baby Esther. Betty Boop was still modeled on Kane, even though Kane had stolen the scat lyrics from a african american woman. Nobody even knew that she had done until the trial. Although Betty was a caricture of kane. Btw, Helen Kane's singing style was common, many women could do that style, although it was most assosiated with Kane, And kane added the Boops with it, in which Betty Boop caricatured. Helen Kane & Paramount Publix, held a contest, to find a look and sound alike, Mae Questel won first place in one of those contests, and was later hired by the Fleischer Studios to do the voice of Betty Boop from 1931. Kane's Popularity never decreased in 1930, around about 1934, it decreased. becuse she was still on stage and radio before-hand. Helen complained that the impersonators and voices of Betty Boop & Betty Boop in general was stealing all her work. Helen found out she had breast cancer, so she quit show buisness for a while, she made a comeback in the 50's until she died in the 60's.

Thanks, Jessica! You seem to know what you're talking about, so I'll assume you're right about this!
