THEORY CORNER'S NEW LOOK (ALMOST)

Wow!!!! Thanks to the folks at Blogger we have new toys to play with! Here's a preview (above) of the new Theory Corner format. I'd intended use this only on the Weekend Edition, but it's so appealing and colorful, that I think I'll redo the whole blog like this. It's not finished yet, but it'll be up soon. What do you think!?

BTW: If you're curious to see what this new beta version of Blogger can do, try the link to it in the Settings>Basics tabs.

love it. the wood is a really nice texture and makes for a good background.

I'm a big fan of wood panelling!

The colors are very appealing, maybe too appealing, that all the visuals will overwhelm the words.

I could be wrong, I dunno.

But I'd suggest putting a bright, maybe post-it colored, "pad" in the center, for the text of the blog. Maybe the "pad" could have different colored "pages".

It might just add to the problem... Just a theory....

I love it, but feel like the banner needs a border or frame.

It's very colourful, like the site and its comment sections.

Thomas: Wow! Putting post-its in the middle is a really great idea!. I'll experiment with it. Many thanks!

Like you I'm worried that the visuals will overwhelm the writing. The photo essays seem to suffer in this format, but doodles on the right sidebar look even better. I'll try it this way for a little while just to see if I still feel the same way a week or two from now.

Jorge: Thanks! Good idea about the border. You're absolutely right. Next time I have to alter the top I'll try what you said...if I can remember how to do it. but everytime I

Alberto, Josh, Rooni: Many thanks!

The redesign looks good!

But some minor quibbles:

You might want to make the pictures on the left and right side smaller. It's overlapping the posts in the middle and makes it hard to read.

And some sort of border or frame on the title banner on top would be nice.

Otherwise, I like it.

Looks great.

Text on the white background works fine.

A border on the header sounds good also.

Granted I'm pretty much of a lurker rather than contributor, but I lurk a lot. For me, the daily - or regularly updated - content is getting lost in the new design. Previously, my attention was immediately drawn to the new stuff; the graphics and commentary had an impact that's vitiated by the profusion of thumbnail images in the sidebars. I realize the importance of keeping previous material and other areas of the site accessible, but with this new design that's coming at the expense of diverting attention to the new material. Since I don't have any idea of what layout and design options Blogger makes available I really can't make any suggestions, only describe how the changes are affecting my experience with the site. I'd really have to say I preferred the simpler, lots-of-white layout.

Paul: Many, many thanks for the criticism! I'l definitely keep it in mind.

Blogger did a great job on the template, but the way I placed everything might be too busy and the color too distracting...I won't know til I finish laying out more of it. There are systemic tweaks that I haven't attempted yet, and the pictures are still mostly unorganized and not sized correctly. It's a work in progress.

I'm just delighted to have color to play with. I love color, though you wouldn't have known that from the way I previously handled the blog.

http://harkavagrant.com/ What do you think of this Comic Eddie? I think her drawings are hilarious and she draws a lot of her comics from history and literature. There is an earthiness which is missing from most webcomics.

Kali: Thanks!

Anon: Haw!
