PUNISHMENT!

Soooo...you guys didn't like the Yiddish Theater post! Gee, that's too bad. I thought entertainment people would be interested in reading about where modern entertainment comes from. I guess I was mistaken.

And you didn't like the vaudeville posters I put up! You didn't even like this one (above)!Amazing! I guess you prefer the wonderful technique in modern posters.

Maybe the vaudeville posters would have meant more if people knew something about the characters they were about. The McFadden's Flats poster I put up referred to the section of town that the Yellow Kid's Hogan's Alley was located in. If you're not familiar with Hogan's Alley click to enlarge the newspaper page above.

The Happy Hooligan poster I put up referred to the character in this comic strip (above, click to enlarge).

And you didn't like the story analysis! Really? Nothing special, huh? You know, it didn't come from a book. It took me hours of thinking to figure that one out. I'd hoped it would be useful to readers who might want to write something funny someday. But...I was mistaken.
Grrrr! What a bunch of meatheads! Why do I waste my time doing stuff for people who don't appreciate it?
I'm taking off for a couple of days to brood! I'll be back (maybe) Saturday, Sept. 8th!

Eddie, I don't know if this may sound corny or clichéd, or if this message would embarrass you, but I had always enjoyed your posts. Really, every post you posted is never boring, and their was so much I had learned from you, such as SECRET’S exclusive to cartoonists, knowing who the heck Frankie Laine was, stories of your own adventures in animation, funny stories about nuns killing horny old men, how much year book photos had changed, learning how goofy Kali really is, and especially getting the knowledge to know what I’ll do, if I ever meet or see Ralph (I hope I do, though, he sounds A LOT like one of my own friends, except he’ll be pissed off when he doesn’t complete his favorite videogame, or when logic passes over his own family, otherwise, a good friend as they come.)

Also, your posts had really helped me, to develop into not only a better cartoonist, but to get my ass down to L.A., donate some stuff to the ASIFA and maybe meeting you and your Motley crew, and learn some more stuff from you and those nutty, but good people you hang out with.

In short, you had inspired me to be a better, hopefully funnier, human being.

P.S., Here is a cartoon that might rejuvinate ya! http://youtube.com/watch?v=LI3FeV7tyFU

Aw, don't be sore Uncle Eddie! Just because we don't comment up a storm on a post doesn't mean we don't like it. I come here every day because I'm always interested in what you have to say!

Hey Eddie check out the comment threads on John K's blog and thank your lucky stars you dont have crazy people writing 8 paragraph polemics on why you should love anime and blowing up any minor contradiction in what you say as proof youre a hypocrite.

One moron actually tried using the fact that his wikipedia page lists led zeppelin and the beatles as favorite bands to prove that he was a hippy and then listed a bunch of crappy new age bands as proof that the movement was alive and well.

Whoa!
So one of the most beloved traditions in cartooning - that of the LOOK-ALIKE NEPHEW TRIPLETS (sometimes quadruplets) - actually began with Happy Hooligan?
Complete with empty tomato cans on their heads!

Whod'a thunk?

BTW, Eddie - John says there's no exact correlation between the effectiveness of the post and the amount of comments it generates.

Some posts, especially the most informative ones, seem to stand alone and require no comment.

Don't worry about it too much Eddie.
I'm sure a lot of people read your stuff they just don't comment.
2 or so days isn't enough time to really look at this stuff and make a well thought out comment; it usually takes me months before I find the idea of what I truly would like to say.
Someone I wouldn't take advice from once said don't say anything 'till you're 55.
I don't have that kind of time but I usually do try to give myself a couple of months or days at least, most people don't.
So no comments are sometimes better than a crapload of them.

The Yellow Kid did a lot to popularize jaundice. And the reason for the lack of commentary on the last post is most of your readers were never circumcised.

I liked it Eddie, I was just left speechless. XD. That and I had work all day designing games n' stuff. Hope you have a good weekend, don't be too mad ok?

Look at it this way Eddie,

Hey I enjoyed the Yiddish Theater post!

Just the other day I was skimming through a new book at the bookstore on this same topic:

ENTERTAINING AMERICA: JEWS, MOVIES AND BROADCASTING

John and Mike are right, don't judge a post by its comment count!

Frankly, Eddie, we didn't want to be associated with your thinly-veiled antisemitism.

Kali, Bruce, Craig, Anon, Brilliant, Sean: Thanks for the kind words!

Mike: LOL! So THAT'S the origin of triplet nephews! At least, like you, I don't know of an earlier example.

Rogelio, Mike: Interesting comments! If you throw a new idea at someone they usually react the way I do, with silence. It's hard to digest something new on the first hearing.

My mind files it away in the "strange but interesting" file then, if I hear it again later and like it, it'll strike me like a bolt of lightning.

This is a natural way to react but it puts gray hairs on the guy with the idea, who sees nothing but an impassive, neutral look on the face of the listener.

I did this to Clampett when I met him for the first time. He thought I didn't like the cartoons he'd showed and was hurt by my lack of enthusiasm. That's because he could only see me on the outside. Inside my whole previous belief system was shattered and I was going through meltdown.

Marc: Thanks for the tip! I'll look it up!

Bruce: Thanks for the Bugs cartoon!

It's not a problem. When I was writing my previous comment, I remembered the commentary you and John did on the Looney Tunes Golden Collections, and I enjoyed what you had said about Wakkiti Rabbit.

Incidentally, it was the first time I had ever saw that cartoon, so I guess it was a treat for me. I can understand how that cartoon was the inspiration for Tales of Worm Paranoia, when it came to how the characters were constantly moving, even when the worms were still, along with the backgrounds in the later half of that cartoon.

I was wondering if you could help me; I'm having a problem with giving character to my drawings, so would it be possible, if you have the time and knowledge, to give me advice about developing character to a illustrated drawing? Because I'm having the most difficult time with it.

Eddie Fitzgerald said...

Bruce: That's covered very well on John's blog!

Aw, don't let a couple of jerks get you down! Your posts are always fantastic! And the only thing wrong with those fantastic posters is they need to be bigger I say!

There's plenty of people here who look forward to each new post even if, like me, they never comment!

Yiddish theatre??!! Not many comments?!!! Gee, go figure! Word on the street is Yiddish Theatre is the latest hot topic around all water cooler chat. What gives!

Eddie , they cant all be winners. Ya got to take your lumps like the rest of us. May I suggest next time putting some kind of spin on it to spice it up. Maybe Yiddish Theatres Funniest Practical Jokes, Bloopers, and Boners hosted by Bob Saggetstein

Hey Eddie I've been away to Burnig Man. I can't think of a post you've
put up that I haven't enjoyed. Your blog is one of the first places I stop each morning. It always gives me something to think about, and usually something to smile about.

On another note my address bar on my Safari browser disappeared this morning. Has this ever happened to you? Is it a fricking virus?

On another side note Eddie except for the harsh conditions, (Sand storms and heat)you would love Burning man. Crazy whimsical vehicles, art all over the place. Including a life size zoetrope of a bunch of chimps swinging around a carousel, plus naked ladies.
Have a great Friday

I heard they're building a Ramada and Marie Callenders right next to Burning Man. That should make it a lot more convenient. Perhaps it will become as popular as the Rennaissance Fair!

See ya

I had my own theory regarding the nephew phenomenon. These theories were confirmed during my time in the military when I inadvertantly stumbled across a classified program that began in the 1930s with the intriging title "Project N.E.P.H.E.W.". Sailors Popeye and Donald Duck were recruited by the Dept. of the Navy for a secret experiment whose intent was to create duplicates of our finest fighting men (and ducks apparently)

The N.E.P.H.E.W acronym stood for:

Nearly
Exact
Poly-
Homogenus
Entities
Without individual personalities

Unfortunately, The program was scrubbed after the military scientists discovered that the duplicate cartoon characters all had the same odd genetic defect WHICH CAUSED THEM TO NEVER AGE. Stuck permanently as preteens, they were completely useless to the War Department, who handed them back to their respective studios. Not knowing what to do with these diminuative dopplegangers, Walt and Max decided to put them to work as "nephews" to their star characters. Whenever questions would arise as to the parentage of these youngsters with the eerie resemblence to their studios star players, it's always been Company Policy to quickly change the subject. But now Eddie, YOU know the rest of the story.

Eddie Fitzgerald said...

Vincent: I've noticed that naked ladies always makes a good event even better.

m@: Yes, some investigative journalism on the subject of breasts would seem to be in order.

Anon: Interesting comment! Thanks!

John A: (!) That nephew acronym was pretty good. You should work for the government!

I have to truly say, that your blog has brought much joy to my life Uncle Eddie. Because of your burger post, I had a manly burger eating party on my patio with my pals (using my secret family recipe and your idea of peppers and bacon grilled together) and listened to Frankie Laine. I'd never even heard of him. He's sorta like Johnny Horton, but manlier. "Liberty Valance" is one of the best songs ever.

Plus, where else can we look at naked girls who spew out thought provoking theories at the same time!
